Democracy in Europe is facing challenges. Youth work can play a key role in revitalising democratic values and engagement.
From 26-29 June, Eurodesk was represented at the 4th European Youth Work Convention by Audrey Frith, Silvia Mangia and Stefanos Agathokleous. The event was organised by Aġenzija Zgħazagħ, EUPA and the EU-Council of Europe Youth Partnership.
500 youth workers, stakeholders and representatives from various youth organisations from 41 countries gathered together in Malta with one goal: strengthening youth work development and identifying directions to support the youth work further to strengthen its role in rejuvenating and acting on democracy.
Significant progress has been made over the past five years since the previous (online) Convention, including the adoption of the European Youth Work Agenda and the launch of the Alliance of Youth Workers Associations hashtag. Many policies and research papers were also released, showing the social relevance of youth work.
During the Convention, Eurodesk Brussels Link contributed with a workshop on AI and inclusive digital communication led by Silvia Mangia and Stefanos Agathokleous. Eurodesk has been experimenting with AI for the past couple of years and has been testing its own AI chatbot.
The conclusions drawn from this convention will shape discussions on the future of the Multiannual Financial Framework and EU youth programmes. Additionally, they will contribute to the 10th Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth, to take place in Malta in October. The European Commission and the Council of Europe reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the development of youth work in Europe and their cooperation through the Youth Partnership.
What is the European Youth Work Convention?
The European Youth Work Convention is a unique gathering. It is the most important and representative event of its kind in Europe with global significance. The Convention gathers almost 500 participants to pave the way for youth work until 2030. In October 2025, ministers responsible for youth from across Europe will convene in Malta to agree on strategies for putting the recommendations of this Convention into practice.
