Finland takes over the Presidency of the Council of the EU

.

Finland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union begins on 1 July and ends on 31 December 2019. The Council is where the governments of the EU member states are represented by government ministers of the member states. The Council meets in ten different configurations, depending on the subject being discussed.

The priorities for Finland’s Presidency are to strengthen common values and the rule of law, to make the EU more competitive and socially inclusive, to strengthen the EU’s position as a global leader in climate action and to protect the security of citizens comprehensively.

Priorities in the field of youth

Finland recognises that social inclusion of young people needs special attention. The presidency intends to adopt Council conclusions on education and training of youth workers.

All young people should have equal opportunities to enhance their digital competences, regardless of their background. Council conclusions on digital youth work are due to be adopted during the presidency.

Finland’s presidency also seeks to pave the way for future negotiations on the proposal for a European Solidarity Corps. This initiative can lead to the employability of young people by developing soft skills and competences and can also help to promote common European values and principles.
